Amy Winehouse Dead
As of press time, the 27 year-old singer’s cause of death is still unknown, though many speculations have led to the suspicion of drug overdose. For years, Winehouse was confined several times to rehab for drug and alcohol abuse. Some unconfirmed reports suggest that the night before her death, Winehouse had been bingeing on liquors and brought cocaine, ecstasy and other drugs. She is just one of the many talented artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison, who died in a young age.
Born as Amy Jade Winehouse on September 14, 1983 in London, the singer-songwriter became popular for incorporating a fusion of jazz, soul and R&B into her music, along with her big and soulful voice. Winehouse successfully debuted in the UK in 2003 with her album Frank. However, it her album Back to Black which was released in 2006 that made Amy Winehouse a household name. After only weeks from its release, the album, with hits like “Rehab” and “Love is a Losing Game”, immediately skyrocketed to number one in the music charts worldwide. The same album also landed her nominations from prestigious music awards, especially the Grammys where she won five awards and became recognized for being the first ever British singer to have done so. Back to Black also became the third best selling album in the UK. It is said that the reason why she is one of the best artists to date is because of her unique way of performing her songs. She always had her own thing that makes her different from other artists. Most describe her music as simple yet direct, classy, jazzy and something that you can enjoy humming or that will make you have a last song syndrome.
Aside from her singing career, Winehouse also became known for being a fashion trendsetter with her famous “beehive-like” hairstyle and black eyeliner drawn upward. Along with her booming career also came the intrigues. Many critics considered her last album Back to Black to be her first and only success as rumors about being alcoholic and her self-destructive behaviors began to affect her singing career. She was set to have a European concert tour, months before her death, but was also cancelled due to internal management problems. Even her love life did not escape the public eye as it also made negative headlines when she and former husband Blake Fielder-Civil faced marital issues that even led the latter to prison. However, she also found new love. At the time of her death a director named Reg Traviss is believed to be linked to Amy Winehouse.
Despite this, Winehouse continues to be a musical legend among her peers. Stars and colleagues paid tribute to the musician. She was recently launched, along with the likes of the Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain, as a member of “27 Club” or a group of musicians who were troubled and died young.
