Obama Gets Bill Passed By Senate
With only a few hours to spare before the debt ceiling was reached, an agreement by Congress that passed both houses is headed to President Obama’s desk for his approval to be put into law. The vote passed the Senate easily 74-26 with huge bipartisan support.
The bill will now go to President Obama’s desk so he sign it and make it an official law. President Obama said that this compromise now requires both parties to try and work together on a much larger solution for the country. The future compromise must be a balanced approach and that everything should be on the table.
Members of both parties were glad to get the debt ceiling debacle over with until after the 2012 elections. The legislation will increase the U.S. borrowing cap and will cut 2 trillion dollars over the next ten years. Many leaders praised the compromise but were not happy with everything in the agreement, but a deal had to be done.
The most positive event throughout this disaster was the surprise visit by Gabrielle Giffords, a Democratic Congresswoman from Arizona, who was severely wounded months ago in a shooting rampage. She was embraced by members of both parties who saluted her for the courage and spirit she has shown.
Even though Obama supports the measure, half of the House Democrats opposed it, so did many conservative Republicans. We will have to see if this bill will make a difference with the spending problem that the GOP is worried about and the Democrats are concerned how this measure will hurt an already struggling economy.
